The 2025 volleyball season has begun with the Lady Bucs competing at the Vegas Classic in the hot state of Nevada. Friday pool play started out with a tough battle against Layton
Christian from Layton, Utah. The Bucs dropped the first set 18- 25 but were able to come back taking the next two sets 25-14 and 25-13 to win their first match of the season. The second match was against Democracy Prep out of Las Vegas. Everyone on the team got to see the floor and practice running 6-2 offense. The girls easily won 2-0 with both sets ending 25-7. Our last game of pool play was against the second overall ranked team in the
tournament and ranked 27th overall in California, Francis- Parker. The girls fought hard but lost 0-2 (11-25 and 20-25). The first set introduced the girls to the higher level of play
and speed of teams that have the experience of playing club year-round. They fought hard and adapted to the speed of the game in set two having a much closer battle. The girls power-punched their way into the Silver bracket, putting them as the highest placed Alaska team going into day 2. Both South Anchorage and Service fought through the Bronze bracket.
Day 2 in the silver bracket was eventful for Valdez. We started off the day with a tough match against West Valley (CA). The girls worked hard and took the match 2-0 (25-22 and 25-19). The second game of the silver bracket was against Meridian (ID). They struggled with communication and lost 0-2 (14-25 and 16- 25). Their third match went back and forth against Mission Bay. They went to 3 sets but came up short with scores 25-23, 10-25, and 10-15. Their last match was against Bullard (CA). This was a
great game and the girls played really well together. The match went to 3 but the girls fell just short of 1-3 (23-25, 26-24, and 9-15). We are so proud of how the girls played this weekend and have set the tone for an exciting season. The girls ended up 8th in the silver bracket and 24th out of 48 teams!
This was a great opportunity and we want to acknowledge and thank all of the parents and players for the hard work they did throughout this past year fundraising and helping with making this trip possible, along with our amazing community and local businesses. The girls got to experience “O” by Cirque du Soleil and have a big dinner on the first night to kick off the trip and celebrate Lola Compehos and Coach Angie Fuschetto’s birthdays. We also wanted to give a big shout out to all the fans that came to support the girls as we had one of the largest
crowds at the tournament!
