The Valdez Buccaneer Girls made the very cold trek up to Eielson this past weekend to compete in a couple of conference contests with the Eielson Ravens. Friday night the Buccaneers’ defense came out ready to play with their defense forcing turnover after turnover by the Ravens. Despite struggling in field goal percentage from the floor the Bucs secured an early 1st quarter lead scoring 17 to Eielson’s 5 points. The Bucs continued to roll to a 59 to 19 point win over the Ravens. Lola Compehos lead all scorers on Friday with 21 points, Destiny Day added 12 points and Hali Fitka contributed 8 points.
Saturday’s contest proved to go much the same way as Friday with the Bucs coming out quickly converting steals into layups and scoring 17 points to Eielson’s 2 points in the 1st quarter. The final game score ended up being Valdez 51 and Eielson 18. Kelli Malcuit lead all scorers on Saturday scoring 12 points, Lola Compehos scored 11 points and Destiny Day and Hali Fitka both contributed 9 points. Despite not being close contests the Bucs were able to get a great deal of valuable floor time for our bench as every player saw the floor for a significant amount of time.
This week the Buccaneers are looking forward to hosting teams at our annual Valdez Elks Basketball Tournament starting on Thursday. Please come out and support our boys and girls teams play this weekend!!
