The Valdez Buccaneer Girls made the long trek to Nome this past week to participate in the Subway Showdown Tournament. Thursday’s match up was against the home team Nome Nanooks. This first game was a very evenly matched and physical competition and unfortunately the Buccaneer girls came up a little short losing to Nome by a score of 33-29. Leading scorers were Rylee Wade and Lola Compehos both with 10 points and Destiny Day contributing 7.
Friday night the Lady Bucs bounced back with a 54-46 win over Unalakleet. Despite Unalakleet being a much taller team, they struggled to keep up with the hustle of Buccaneer girls. Destiny Day lead all scorers that day with 25 points, Rylee Wade had 14 points, Sofia Ramos had 8 points and Lola Compehos contributed 5.
The Buccaneer girls finished off the weekend with a 44-32 win over the Kotzebue Huskies. Lola Compehos led all scorers Saturday with 17 points, Rylee Wade had 10 points and Destiny Day had 9 points.
The Buccaneer Girls ended up taking 2 nd Place in the Tournament. Destiny Day and Rylee Wade both made the All-Tournament Team and Destiny Day was also the overall winner in the free throw competition.
Overall, this was a great weekend of competition. The Lady Bucs found themselves down a few players for this tournament forcing players without a great deal of experience to step up and contribute and they did just that. Super proud of how this team all came together this week. Not much rest for the girls this next week as they will be leaving for Delta Wednesday afternoon to participate in the Dean Cummings Tournament.
