This past weekend Buccaneer wrestling traveled North to compete in the annual Dustin Baxter Memorial wrestling tournament hosted by West Valley High School. On the way up the Bucs made a pit stop to compete in a dual meet against Delta High School. Dual meets are competitions between two teams. Each team enters one wrestler per weight class, and he or she wrestles an opponent in that weight class from the other team. Team scoring is kept in dual meets (similar to a basketball game), and the winning wrestler is awarded three to six points depending on the nature of the win (decision 3 points, major decision 4 points, Tech fall 5 points, or fall 6 points).
Valdez dominated Delta with a final dual score of 39 – 24. Kicking things off at 145 pounds was Junior Eli Critchlow, scoring 6 points with a pin at 1:36 in the first period. The Bucs then scored 5 more consecutive pins to jump ahead to a 36 point lead.
Friday evening tournament action began at West Valley High School where once again the Bucs got off to a hot start punching 5 wrestlers through to the semi-finals. Reaching the finals was Senior Mckennan Mayer and Juniors Dalen Beck and Carlie Vanbuskirk. Carlie dominated in the finals with a pin 0:40 seconds into the 2nd period, with Dalen and Mckennan dropping decision (a win by 1-7 points) losses. Also placing for the Bucs was Freshman Dylan Passage, (4th place 135lbs), Eli Critchlow (6th place 145lbs), Landon Metzger (6th place 152lbs), Romen Weber (4th place 160lbs), AJ Tudela (6th place 171lbs), and Brandon Smith (placing 1st Junior Varsity 160lbs).
Next week the Bucs travel to Anchorage for the annual Anchorage Christian School Invitational (now MCCA – Mountain City Christian Academy), this tournament features wrestlers from every small school in the state and will be a great test for our team. Go Bucs!
