The Bucs Cross-Country team headed to North Pole to run three loops around the Chena River Park Recreation Area. The terrain varied from grass, wood chips, dirt to gravel. It was a fairly flat trail with little elevation change. We were thankful for reprieve from the rain.
Sixty girls hit the trail first. This was the first race for Freshman Jewely Weber. She started off really strong. J. Weber’s shoe came untied, her ankle was sore, and she lost a little steam after a mile and a half, but pushed hard to the finish line at 27.40, placing 33rd. Junior Morgan Hamilton spent the last couple of weeks nursing shin splints. She felt confident going into her birthday race. Hamilton stayed in the middle of the pack and pushed herself all the way to the end, improving her time from Freshman year by one minute and setting a new season record of 28:18, placing 35th.
The much anticipated boys race consisted of 106 runners. Senior Caruthers had his sights on a top 5 overall finish. He stayed in the front of the pack with the larger West Valley and Lathrop runners. Caruthers slowly edged himself into 3rd place, where he battled Delta for 2nd only to be edged out by one second, finishing in 17:47, a new PR. Junior Roman Weber stayed strong throughout the race, losing 4 seconds from last week’s race and finished 38th at 20:31. Lastly, Sophomore James Humphrey shaved over 6.5 minutes from last year’s race on this same course. Humprey has made impressive gains and another PR 21:35, placing 52rd.
Next week, the Bucs cross-country team heads to Glenallen to face off against Glenallen and Wasilla.
