VHS Weekend Wrap-Up – Aug 20, 2018

August 18th – Football @ Nikiski
Valdez lost 28-48, but it was close in the first half.
The team moved the ball well, in all four quarters. We were pleased that our offensive line, led by Luke Baczuk, generated 316 yards of rushing. Hayden Howard, Jona Turner, Jimmy Chavez, and Owen Chadwick all scored touchdowns.
This was the first game of the season, and mistakes, and youth took its toll, but all in all we are excited and pleased with the team’s performance. Everyone saw playing time!
Next Game: 6:00 pm, August 24th @ Ketchikan
August 18th – North Pole Cross Country Invite
The Buccaneer Cross Country season started with a sunny jaunt around Chena Lakes campground. The course was fairly flat and a mix between grass and packed dirt surfaces. The team basked in the warm sun that we have been missing in Valdez. Attending our first meet were juniors Kalin Woods and Katelyn Wadsworth, and freshman William Benes. This was an open race for all athletes to get their racing legs warmed up. Kalin Woods applied strategies we have practiced to earn an impressive fourth place with a finish of 19:08. Completing his first high school race, William Benes picked up the pace halfway through the course for a time of 26:01. Overcoming a pulled muscle, Katelyn Wadsworth sprinted through the finish line at 26:53. This young team shows a lot of potential for speed and strength. It is going to be a great season watching them grow as runners. We would love to have more runners out there. It’s not too late for high schoolers to join.
Next Meet: is August 25 @ Birch Hill in Fairbanks.
Our home meet is Saturday, August 31st. Come out and support your Buccaneers Cross-Country team! Races begin at 11:00am. Volunteers are needed, please contact Coach Koontz at mkoontz@valdezcityschools.org. We hope to see you there!
August 18th- Colony High School Invite
Coaches’ Comments
The drive to and from the swim meet was clear roads with a few sparse rain showers along the way. The swimmers seem to be very motivated at the beginning of this season and it definitely showed in their swimming.
Most of our veteran swimmers swam very close to the their last years region times which is a great indicator that they are coming into this stronger than before. Our new swimmers had an excellent learning opportunity at this meet as they start to get use to the competitive swimming atmosphere. They gave great effort and set their baselines for this season. A very strong start to this season and it will be exciting to see how far this years swim team can go!
