NYO State – Rod Morrison

The Valdez NYO Teams competed in state at the UAA Alaska Airlines Center on April 26-28th.

For thousands of years, Alaska Native people survived harsh elements and challenging landscapes by relying on one another and working together towards common goals. Traditional athletic contests and games helped develop skills critical to everyday life in Alaska’s demanding climates. Today’s NYO games carries on a spirit by encouraging young people to strive for their personal best while helping and supporting their teammates.

At this year’s games there were 56 teams and over 400 athletes competed and the Valdez teams had several top ten finishes and many of of our athletes hit their personal best in their events.

Quentin Cox and Chevon Oxford the two seniors on this year teams provided excellent leadership throughout the season. The Valdez teams represented the schools and town with excellent sportsmanship and we are excited to see the younger athletes develop for next years’ event.

Six High School Students attended the Alaska Association of Student Government Spring Conference in Healy, Alaska.  The students were Rylee King, Kira Friend, Bim Palomar, Ally Seiber, Alexis Stanford, and Kendall Wesenberg. Almost 400 student government members from all schools throughout Alaska converged on the small windy town of Healy and were met with incredible hospitality!  Students come together to discuss important issues, present resolutions, hear from keynote speakers (Sen. Lisa Murkowski), got an opportunity to explore the community and attend workshops. For the Community explorations, Mrs. Heckathorn went on a tour of the Usibelli coal mine, several of the students attended a ranger led hike in Denali National Park, while others created recycled book art.

Kendall and Alexis presented Chloe Miller’s resolution to change jazz band to a weighted class.
