FAIRBANKS — Rushing and forcing turnovers aided the Valdez Buccaneers in a 38-20 upset of the Nikiski Bulldogs in a nonconference, season-opening high school football game Saturday morning in Valdez.
“I was very impressed with the way we played. It was error-free, tight football that you want to see as a coach,’’ Valdez head coach Steve Radotich said by cellphone.
The Buccaneers, of the Aurora Conference, entered the game with a 1-10 record against the Bulldogs. The previous win occurred in 2007, which also was Valdez’s only appearance so far in the small schools state playoffs.
