Starting January 2nd, 2019, the Alaska Department of Motor Vehicles will start issuing Real ID compliant state IDs and driver’s licenses. Residents won’t be required to show them until October 2020 but are being encouraged to apply for a Real ID sooner than later.

The cost is also higher: $40 for a driver’s license and $35 for a state ID. On the plus side, they will be valid for eight years and can be renewed online every other time, meaning you’ll only have to renew in person every 16 years.
