(3-28-16) – The VHS Varsity Girls basketball team competed in the 3A state basketball tournament last weekend in Anchorage. The Lady Bucs came into the tournament as the 3^rd overall seed for the tournament. On Thursday the girls had their first game for the tournament against the Mt. Edgecumbe Lady Braves. This proved to be a difficult matchup for Valdez. Going into the fourth quarter Valdez had the lead 24-22, but Mt. Edgecumbe stepped up defensively and outscored the Lady Bucs 15-8 and won 37-32. With that loss Valdez then looked for a 4^th place finish for the tournament. On Friday, Valdez had to beat Grace Christian to earn a spot in the 4^th place game. Once again the Lady Bucs had difficulty scoring throughout the game and lost 37-29.  Those two loses concluded the tournament run for the girls. They finished the year with a regular season record of 20-4 and finished 11-1 in their division. In addition, the Lady Bucs finished 1^st place in the Elks basketball tournament as well as the regional tournament. The team says goodbye to five graduating seniors: Katy Merioles; Sidney Hursh; Maddy Fleming; Molly Albright; and Alexis Woods.
