GMS SWEEPS DELTA TOURNAMENT
The Gilson Middle School Basketball teams and Cheer squad went to Delta this past weekend to compete in a tournament. Valdez swept the tournament, taking 1st place in the boys and girls Varsity and Junior Varsity divisions.
The Boys A Team dominated the Varsity tournament at the Delta Tournament. “All of our kids played extremely hard,” said Coach Joe Robison. “We got better with each game, and their hard work paid off with winning the championship. Not only did we play hard, but our kids represented Valdez very well”. Valdez player Payton Gage was named all-tournament and Brandon Nguyen was named MVP.
The Valdez A Team came out strong in the Delta tournament, worked together and had balanced scoring. The Delta team came out playing very physical on Friday but Valdez hung tough and won by a score of 20-12. Valdez met Delta again in the Championship game and won 52-18. “The girls really came together as a team this weekend,” said Coach Laurie Prax. “Everyone played hard and learned a lot. We are starting to gel as a team and work together”. Kylie Fletcher-Gilbert was named MVP of the tournament and Lily Alfaro was named to the all tournament team.
The Junior Varsity Girls lost to Tri-Valley on Friday, but came up through the losers bracket Saturday to meet them again in the Championship Game. On Saturday afternoon, despite losing standout player Peyton Wade to a sprained ankle, the team won the Championship. Valdez B team saw solid scoring from Lydia Robart, Lucy Selanoff, Peyton Wade and Jasmine Bravo. Wade and Mya Christofferson led the team in rebounds throughout the weekend.
