Nordic Ski at Birch Hill

Nordic Ski at Birch Hill, November 2025

Submitted by VHS Nordic Ski Coach

The Buccaneer Nordic Ski Team traveled to Fairbanks this weekend to enjoy their first ski of the season. After weeks of hard work running, core workouts, stair laps, and wax lessons the skiers were finally rewarded with time on snow. Eighteen skiers made the trip to take advantage of the early-season conditions at Birch Hill.

Upon arrival Friday afternoon, we had a great practice on the lit ski trails. Beginners had the opportunity to get a feel for the sport and use the large, flat stadium area to practice classic technique, while experienced skiers leaned into their muscle memory to work on skate technique. They prepared for the next day’s race with some long, slow distance skiing around the trails, practicing all skate techniques and skiing down hills they had raced on last year during regionals and state. By the end of practice Friday night, everyone felt encouraged and excited to finally be skiing.

Saturday brought another chance for all skiers to get on snow and enjoy a strong practice. With fresh snow falling, beginners got their first experience on hills and had a blast learning how to control their skis through the terrain park. Meanwhile, ten skiers prepared for and competed in a unique sprint series race. Each skier completed a qualifier lap followed by a semifinal and final round, three sprints total, continually being placed against skiers of similar speed to create fast and competitive heats. Each lap was 1 km, and the Bucs showed that even without time on skis yet this season, they could pick up right where they left off last year. Every skier raced hard and gave their all in each sprint.

Not only was it excellent practice for learning how to prepare and warm up for future races, it also gave the skiers a chance to reflect on what they each want to improve this year. We ended the day in high spirits, encouraged by the fact that it’s only up from here for this team. The desire and competitiveness are there, we just need the snow to start working toward each skier’s goals.

With this strong start, the Bucs are fired up for the season. Bring on the snow!
