Courtesy of NYO Coach– This weekend our NYO team traveled to Anchorage to compete in their only competition of the year. The students gathered with over 450 other athletes from across the state and celebrated the culture and community through eleven different events based on traditional games which build the skills and strength need to successfully hunt and live in the arctic.
We had 12 high school athletes participate. Our spring break gave us a very short season this year, and some of our students had some frustrating misses or slips. While we didn’t come home with any podium finishes this year, the athletes had a great me catching up with old friends, seeing family they don’t often see, meeting new people, and sharing tips with other athletes about each event.
We are all excited about next year (and these two new coaches feel like they know how to improve too). The pictures a ached are far superior at describing how impressive these athletes are than I can ever be with words.
Official distances and final places are all TBA, but regardless of where the officially placed, we are so proud of their hard work and dedication!
