Valdez 37– Cordova 11
The Valdez Girls started off the Tournament with their across Prince William Sound rivals, the Cordova Wolverines. It was nice to have a Valdez vs Cordova game back in the Valdez Gym! The Buccaneer girls were able to play some tough defense and hold the Wolverines to two 2 point quarters. Kylie Gilbert lead all scorers with 11 points, Carsyn Hinkle had 7 points, Lily Brown with 6 points, Ambrosia Woodgate to 4 points, and Lucy Selanoff and Kelsey Prax had 2points each.

Valdez 29– Nome 31
The Buccaneer Girls second game of the Tournament was a tough one. It was a back and forth battle with the Nome Nanooks. Down 15-21 at the half, the girls battled back to within one point at the end of the 3 rd quarter. In a defensive struggle in the 4 th quarter, Valdez held Nome to only 2 points in the quarter, but could only score 1 free throw for the quarter. Lily Brown had 10 points, Kylie Gilbert had 9 points, Carsyn Hinkle had 5 points, Ambrosia Woodgate and Kelsey Prax had 2 points, and Lucy Selanoff had 1 point.

Valdez 31 – North Pole 44
In the final game of the Tournament, the Girls played the North Pole Patriots on Saturday afternoon. The team got in some foul trouble early in the game, and a much more physical North Pole team held the Buccaneers to only 2 offensive rebounds. The Girls battled hard the whole game. Carsyn Hinkle, Mya Christoffersen, and Kelsey Prax each had 7 points. Ambrosia Woodgate had 4 points, and Lucy Selanoff and Kat Taylor each added 2 points.
This tournament had big team improvements in rebounding and on defense. Ambrosia Woodgate had the tough defensive assignments all weekend and really stepped up. Carsyn Hinkle rebounded the ball well and went hard to the basket, having her best games of the season. Kylie Gilbert was named to the All-Tournament Team and the Valdez Girls won the Girls Sportsmanship Award for the Tournament.
The next 3 weekends with be league games against Hutchison, Monroe, and Delta. Then Valdez will host the Regional Tournament on March 10-12.

VHS Varsity Boys Basketball Wrap-Up [February 10th – 12th]
Courtesy of VHS Coaches – Valentine’s Day weekend in Valdez has become synonymous with the Valdez Elks Tournament- which used to occur around Christmastime before the high school basketball season was modified. The longest running tournament in Alaska, in its 44th year after a hiatus last year, changes and modifications are to be expected. What has remained consistent during the tournament history is the community support and involvement in the tournament, or the desire for opposing teams to secure one of the 8 slots.
The teams that competed in the 44th annual Valdez Elk’s Tournament were: Bethel Warriors, Cordova Wolverines, Delta Junction Huskies, Houston Hawks, Monroe Catholic Rams, Nome Nanooks, North Pole Patriots, and the Valdez Buccaneers.
A special note of appreciation to all those involved in the planning and execution of the tournament. As coaches, we get to see and experience many different formats, venues, and tournament atmospheres. The Valdez Elks Tournament is the gold standard.
Thursday, February 10th: Valdez 67, Cordova 28
One of the traditions that has become a mainstay in the Elks Tournament is the first-round, cross-Sound, matchup of the Valdez Buccaneers and Cordova Wolverines. Thursday’s evening game was played mere hours after the Wolverines disembarked the ferry and was the first game in a grueling 10-day, 9-game road trip.
While sympathetic towards the travel and scheduling logistics that the Wolverines face, the Bucs hadn’t taken the court since a last-second 3-pointer in Seward sent them to their second loss of the season. Thus, they were ready to wash that bad taste out of their mouth and exact a measure of revenge; playing with purpose and intensity, they never trailed in the contest.
The Bucs led 18-5 after the first quarter and 30-13 at halftime. In the third quarter they nearly doubled their total as they recorded an impressive 24-point quarter to take a 54-23 lead into the final stanza. In the fourth quarter, they established a 40 point advantage, thereby triggering a “running clock” for the remainder of the game as they cruised to a 67-28 win.
All 12 Buccaneer players entered the game and contributed statistically, 10 of them in the scoring column. Payton Gage led all scorers with 18 points, including all three of the Buccaneer’s 3-pointers. Bryce Tucker scored 12 points and Allen Watson netted 10 while also swiping 7 steals.
Dennis Mott saw limited action due to an early injury to his mouth that resulted in a trail of blood from the court to the locker room . In the fourth quarter, after getting cleaned (and stitched) up, he was able to return to action in the fourth quarter – much to the delight of a raucous and spirited Buccaneer Student Section.

Friday, February 11th: Valdez 61, Nome-Beltz 59
While grabbing a snack in the hospitality room on Friday, the Nome assistant coach referred to the atmosphere in the Elks Tournament as “the best around.” That was before the evening contest between Valdez and Nome. He was surely not disappointed with the gametime atmosphere – as the student section, recently re-assembled pep band, and crowd was out in full force on Friday.
The Buccaneer faithful had few occasions to revel in the game events early on, as Nome jumped out to a 14-6 first quarter lead and looked like the more motivated and aggressive team throughout the entirety of the first half. Entering intermission the Nanooks held a 27-22 lead on the scoreboard and a huge advantage on the boards – grabbing 7 offensive rebounds and 20 total rebounds in the first half alone.
The discrepancy in rebounding, intensity, and hustle plays was thoroughly discussed during halftime. Some of what was said must have resonated with the Bucs, as they came out the aggressors in the second half and thoroughly controlled the interior – including rebounds.
Behind 10 third-quarter points by Payton Gage, and 7 by Bryce Tucker, the Bucs won the frame and entered the fourth quarter knotted at 45 apiece.
Nome, who in the first half was getting interior baskets and offensive rebounds, spent much of the second half settling for long-range jumpers. For the game, Nome shot as many 3-pointers (29) as they did 2-pointers (24) and free throws (5).
With about 6:30 remaining in the game, Nome took a 50-47 advantage. The Bucs then went on a 10-0 run and had a 7 point margin (57-50) with about 3:30 left. Some rushed shots and sloppy execution by the Bucs, coupled with some key shot-making by Nome, saw the lead dwindle to 3 (59-56) with 2:24 to play. Payton Gage made a few clutch free throws, followed by a quick 3-pointer by Nome, to round out the scoring with 1:22 remaining. Nome began fouling on the defensive end in an effort to increase their foul count to force the Bucs to shoot free throws. After getting the foul count to 6, the Bucs turned the ball over – allowing Nome to inbound the ball with a chance to tie or take the lead with less than one minute to play.
The near-capacity crowd was fully engaged at this point, having had plenty to cheer about regardless of whom they were partisan towards, as the second half was chocked full of big plays and plenty of scoring (71 points combined).
The final :45 seconds of the game saw a turnover by the Bucs, followed by a turnover by the Nanooks, followed by a turnover by the Bucs. The score remained 61-59 with :12 remaining and the Nanooks inbounding the ball beneath their own basket. A strong defensive effort kept the Nanooks from getting a clean look. A subsequent foul by the Bucs reset the inbounds on the baseline with approximately 5 seconds to play.
The noise provided by the Valdez Student Section during the last few possessions made their previous efforts a few minutes prior seem like the quiet whispers one may find on the golf course or in a church. If there was a way for the crowd to get a defensive assist, they earned one on the final possession. A strong defensive sequence by the Bucs forced the Nanooks into a long, contested 2-pointer that was off the mark and allowed the Bucs to escape with a 61-59 win.
Nome finished the game with 9 offensive, and 24 total, rebounds. Meaning the Bucs held the Nanooks to 4 TOTAL rebounds in the second half. Additionally, the Bucs shot an impressive 12-of-14 (85%) from the free throw line – an area that has been problematic for the Bucs at times this season.
Payton Gage led the Bucs with 23 points and Bryce Tucker netted 13.

Saturday, February 12th: Valdez 46, Houston 65
The thrilling victory on Friday set up a matchup of two class 3A teams having good seasons: the undefeated (13-0) Houston Hawks and the hometown Valdez Buccaneers (13-2).
Houston entered the game averaging 72 points per game, while the Bucs entered the game yielding an average of 42 points per game. The first half featured a game flow and score that favored Valdez, as Houston found themselves in foul trouble early on and unable to convert offensively at a rate they are accustomed to. The Bucs held a slim margin at the end of the first quarter (17-14) and both teams registered 9 points in the second quarter, allowing them to enter halftime with a 26-23 edge. The start of the second half got off to a late start due to an official delay. To be clear, the “official delay” was not due to the three referees sorting out some nuanced rule or scoring discrepancy. Nay. Rather, the delay was due to the fact that three experienced officials were not on the court in order to start the half on time. Teams and fans alike were forced to wait an additional 60 seconds for their arrival. When they did jog onto the court, an official retrieved the ball from the scorer’s table and underhand tossed it to his counterpart – only to hit Payton Gage in the back of the head with the ball. In hindsight, perhaps that sequence was an omen of things to come.
Valdez had a few early opportunities in the 3rd quarter, including no fewer than 3 unconverted layups, but were unable to capitalize and allow Houston to hang around in the game. Even with the miscues, Valdez extended the lead to 7 points (32-25) midway through the 3rd quarter before the Houston offense found its stride and took over the game.
With approximately 90 seconds to play in the third, Houston tied the game. Two 3-pointers in the final 30 seconds (including a half court heave at the buzzer that hit front iron, bounced about 6 feet in the air and dropped through the hoop) had the momentum firmly on the Houston Hawks side entering the final stanza with a 6-point advantage. Additionally, the wound was still fresh from a similar shot a mere week prior.
The Bucs were never able to fully mount a response, as their offense went cold as Houston’s continued to heat up. Houston outscored Valdez 42-20 in the second half, including 25-12 in the fourth quarter, as they remained unbeaten and secured an Elk’s championship by a final score of 65-46.
A big factor in Houston’s dominant second half was turnovers, as they forced Valdez into 17 turnovers while only committing 3 themselves (all in the first half). Additionally, as has been mentioned here ad nauseam, free throw shooting has been an Achilles heel of sorts for the 2021-2022 Bucs. They entered the Houston game shooting 14-of-17 (82%) from the free throw line for the tournament, tops amongst all boys teams.
However, in the championship game the Bucs shot a woeful 10-of-21 (47%) from the charity stripe.
Dennis Mott and Allen Watson each scored 11 points for the Bucs in a losing effort.
Notes:
Bryce Tucker was voted to the All Tournament Team and Payton Gage was named the Most Valuable Player for the tournament.
Next Game:
The Bucs next travel to Fairbanks this weeked (Feb. 18 &19) to take on Aurora Conference for Hutchison High School as they look to exact some revenge on some Hawks…any Hawks will do.

Regional Competition 2022

Blake Morrison tagging Blake Roosma in the 4x3k Relay.
The first day of the competition was a mass start classic technique race. Thankfully Fairbanks temperatures were not too cold rising to 5 degrees by race time. The boys skied first on day one competing in a challenging 10k race. Each of the 8 competing boys skied two 5k laps. The Buccaneer boys skied a strong race against some tough competition. The top four finishers from each school were totaled up for the team score. Rafe Carruthers, Barrett McCumby, William Benes, and Cole Wadsworth skied an impressive race and scored a team time that placed them in second for the overall team results! Senior Blake Morrison and freshman Blake Roosma also skied a great race fighting through the difficult 10k and earning a spot on our state team. The girls were up next competing in a 7.5K classic technique race. Captain Elaina Hanson finished in an impressive 18th place and Grace Rodgers placed 20th in her first regional competition. Now that the Buccaneer skiers have experienced this course they have a good. advantage before the ASAA State competition in two weeks on the same course.
Buc boys cheering Grace Rodgers to the finish!
Day two of the competition was the team relays. With 8 boys skiing this year we were able to field 2 boys relay teams in a fun and fast 4x3k skate race. Valdez A, comprised of the top 4 finishers from day 1, skied a great race and had an exciting back and forth against Monroe with Monroe finishing just ahead of the Bucs this time. Senior William Benes had a great anchor leg of the relay skiing a personal best 3k time of 11:20. The Second Buccaneer team was led by senior Blake Morrison, in the second position was Blake Roosma, in third Patrick O’Brien, and Anchoring was Ezeikel Duncan. Both of our relay teams skied great races and now have a great gauge to set some goals for our relay team at state.
Captain William Benes bringing the Buccaneer spirit!
Ezekiel Duncan rounds the final turn to the finish!
Go Bucs!
