VALDEZ, ALASKA (September 9, 2026) — On September 9, 2026, Maria K. Varenhorst, 43, of Valdez, died while receiving medical treatment at Providence Valdez Medical Center following a reported assault. Her next of kin have been notified.
The Valdez Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. On September 7, 2026, Varenhorst reported to police that she had been assaulted at a local lodging facility.
Investigators are working to determine whether the reported assault played a role in Varenhorst’s death. The suspect in the assault has been identified and interviewed.
The State of Alaska Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death. The findings will assist investigators as they continue their investigation.
The investigation remains active and ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time. Additional information will be released when it can be provided without compromising the investigation or the integrity of the legal process.
