Courtesy of VHS Coaches – The Valdez Girls Varsity Basketball team took a long road trip to Nikiski to participate in the 34th Annual Rus Hitchcock Nikiski Tip Off Tournament. It was a round robin tournament against three 3A basketball teams: Nikiski, Kotzebue, and Homer.

In the first game against the host team, Nikiski, Masen Holmes and Destiny Day combined for 41 of the buccaneer points. Nikiski had trouble stopping Holmes on the inside and fouled her repeatedly, sending her to the free throw line to shoot 20 free throws. She made a record 15 of the 20. Day shot from the outside and drove hard at the basket scoring 6 out of 7 in field goal attempts.

In the second game against Kotzebue, the girls once again took the ball inside against a smaller Kotzebue team. The Bucs rebounded Kotzebue 39 to 25. Kotzebue proved to be very scrappy and tested the ball handling skills of the guards.

In the third and championship game against Homer, the girls played solid defense as Homer stayed with them until half-time and then the Bucs defense held Homer to only two points in the 3 rd quarter and only 5 points in the 4th quarter. One key to our win was the play off the bench when our post got into foul trouble early in the game and our starting wing player also had to sit because of fouls early, it was good to see our bench stepped in and fill those spots and not see a noticeable let down in out intensity or our scoring.

Overall it was a good weekend for our young team. We played solid defense, and on the offense end of the floor we had different people step up as scores. It was good to see us starting to play as a unit. Nikiski hosted 4 shooting contests on Saturday morning:
-Team Hot Shot Shooting Competition, seniors: Carsyn Hinkle, Mya
Christoffersen, and Masen Holmes worked together to win the contest.
-Carlie VanBuskirk won the Free Throw Competition.
– Masen Holmes competed in the Post Competiton and impressed everyone
with her drop step and hook jump shot.

Mason Holmes was selected as the Girls MVP for the tournament, which was a well deserved.

Destiny Day made the All-Tournament team with her outstanding guard play in her first High School Basketball Tournament.

Lily Brown has become a force on the boards and her moves around the basket, Carsyn Hinkle has intensified the defense and passing assists inside to the posts, Mya Christoffersen and Rylee Wade had increased the outside shooting threat of the team, Carlie VanBuskirk has added depth to our post play and is making her presence known.
