Courtesy of GMS Coaches – Gilson Middle School hosted the Spring Fling Volleyball tournament this weekend.  This was the first time this season that our Lady Huskies were able to play on their home turf. The A- team began the tournament with the goal of continuing their winning streak as they’ve had an undefeated season so far.  By the end of Friday night, they had defeated each of their opponents (Glennallen, Delta, Nome and ACS).  The next day, A-team faced Nome to battle it out for the 1st place trophy.  The match was a nail-biter and went to three sets, but ultimately our A-team came out with the win.  The A-team got to experience some tougher competition during this tournament and it was neat to see them have to pull together as a team and work under pressure. Riley Wade won MVP in the Varsity division and Lola Compehos and Alaina Quintana made the All Tournament Team.  Coach Craig is so proud of all her team has accomplished and feels it is a bittersweet ending as 10 of the 11 of the girls are 8th graders and will be moving on to High School.

“B-team was excited to finally play in front of the hometown crowd.  The girls worked hard all season and showed some amazing improvement in skill level and overall teamwork.  During Friday’s round robin they went undefeated taking down Delta 2, Nome 2, Delta 1, Glennallen, ACS and Nome 1.  Saturday morning began the single elimination bracket where we knocked out our own Valdez C-Team and Nome 2 on our way to the Championship Game against Nome 1.  Nerves got the best of them early in set one, but with some amazing saves they rallied from behind and won the Championship game in two sets.  Elaine Gilson was awarded Tournament MVP and Emily Brewi made the All Tournament Team. It was a great ending to a really fun season. I’m so proud of each of the girls and looking forward to next year!” -Coach Fuschetto

C-team showed much improvement this weekend and ended up with a win against Glennallen during Round Robin Play Friday.  They faced Glennallen yet again Saturday morning and won, which led them to play against our B-team. Before the match started, both B and C-team came together in one giant circle to cheer together in center court.  This display of unity showed that although our Huskies are divided up into separate teams and sometimes have to compete against one another, they are still one big family and support one another.  Although C-team did not come out on top during their match, they fought hard.  C- team’s Tila Compehos also made the All Tournament Team in the JV Division.
