Courtesy of GMS Coaches – Gilson Middle School basketball and cheer traveled to Delta for a tournament this past weekend.

The students played great and more importantly represented Valdez in a positive way. We received compliments from the Delta principal and athletic director on the sportsmanship and politeness of our student athletes.

Girls Basketball

The Varsity girls competed in the annual MS basketball tournament at Delta this past weekend.  The girls played hard, and used the opportunity to get better.

1st Round:  GMS – 31. Tok – 12

The girls opened the tournament against the Tok Wolverines on Friday afternoon.  After the long bus ride, the girls struggled some early, but eventually just overmatched the Wolverines in route to a 31 – 12 victory.

Semifinals:  GMS – 21  Glennallen – 14

Later on Friday, the Huskies matched up with the Glennallen Panthers in a semi-final game.  The first half was hard fought, and the girls found themselves down 10-9 at halftime.  After being challenged at halftime, they proceeded to outscore the Panthers 12-4 in the 2nd half, with Glennallen’s only points coming with under a minute to go in the game.  The defensive effort in the 2nd half led the way for the Huskies to advance to the championship game.  Destiny Day and Autumn Boone had strong 2nd half performances to lead the Huskies.

Championship Game:  GMS – 29.  Glennallen – 4

The Huskies met Glennallen once again in the Championship game.  The Girls made some adjustments from the first meeting, and came out and controlled the game from the start.  It was the girls best game of the weekend.  Their defensive pressure caused Glennallen problems throughout the game.  The girls won the championship by a score of 29 – 4.  Both Destiny Day and Lola Compehos played really well and led the way for the Huskies.

Girls Basketball

B Team girls had a great tournament in Delta last weekend.  We had the opportunity to enter two teams which meant 7 games and lots of playing time for everyone!  B1 won against both Glennallen and Delta on Friday, sending them to the championship game Saturday afternoon where they saw Delta again and came away tournament champions!  High point scorer of the tournament was Parker King with 16 pts. in the championship game.

After a close game that resulted in a loss to Delta Friday afternoon, B2 came back with a win against Glennallen in a late 8 PM game Friday night.  Joslyn Beck was on fire, scoring 12 of 22 points.  Saturday saw two more close games that resulted in losses to Delta and Glennallen.  The amount of growth and understanding of the game from the first game to the last was remarkable!

Boys Basketball

The boys team competed in the Delta tournament this weekend.  The first game was against Tok which the boys won easily with every contributing in a good team win.

The next game was a semi-final game against the host Delta Grizzlies. This game was very close the whole way with the lead never getting much past 5 points for either team.  In the end the Huskies pulled away slightly to take a 3 point victory.

The championship came was a rematch of the semi-final game.  The Huskies jumped out to a 12 point lead in the first half.  After the half Delta made a run and cut the lead to 5, but the Huskies held on to get the win and secure the championship.  The Huskies were led by Zachary Holbrook and James Morgan, with a good defensive showing by Tristen Mayer.

Boys “B” Team

The games this week were a great experience for the B team huskies. We split into two teams with B2 taking the long road to the championship by playing Delta twice as well as Glennallen, and B1 played Delta and our own B2 team to get into the championship game. The teams scrimmaged in the final game and took home the first place plaque, which was very well deserved. Both teams showed outstanding hustle and great sportsmanship.
