DISCUSSION ON PROCESS AND CONSIDERATION FOR COVID-19 DISASTER DECLARATION AND MASK MANDATE SLATED FOR TUESDAY NIGHT SPECIAL MEETING

The City Council voted to issue a Proclamation asking Valdezeans to work together to keep the community healthy last Thursday but Council Members Susan Love Jimmy Devens and Alan Sorum wanted to see more than that and asked the Council to enact a mask mandate. Council members discussed whether a mandate would be well received, and there were concerns regarding enforcement. Healthcare workers provided insight to the Valdez medical situation Valdez and implored the community to take action. One healthcare worker explained she would be losing her job because hospital workers are being required to get the vaccine. Many different viewpoints were expressed and the discussion was largely respectful.

A Special meeting was requested for Tuesday at 6pm to put forth a mandate and City Clerk Sheri Pierce explained that a mandate would have to include a penalty for violation of the mandate. Pierce also clarified that a Disaster Declaration would have to be issued before a mandate could be enacted. By Friday evening, the City of Valdez had issued a Special Meeting with Process and Considerations for COVID-19 Disaster Declaration and Mask Mandate as a discussion item. No action can be taken on a Discussion item.
