Wrestling

Denali Conference Regional Tournament

Courtesy of VHS Coaches – Congratulations to the 2021 ASAA State Wrestling Qualifiers Alyvia Askren, Jana Allen, Wyatt Williams, and William Benes. Leading the Buccaneers at the conference tournament is junior Wyatt Williams who controlled Delta’s Oran Brown the entire six minutes. After not wrestling for two weeks due to knee injury, Williams was able to score the first takedown and maintain control for the remainder of the match and become the 2021 Denali Conference champion. Junior Alyvia Askren also got off to a hot start winning via a first period fall against Lathrop’s Zoe Dalrymple, but fell to North Pole’s Megan Parrish in the championship bout, which forced a true second match versus Hutchison’s Lydia Patterson to decide who would go to go to the state tournament. Askren made a statement winning via a first period fall, she is the 2021 Denali Conference runner-up and state qualifier. Also finishing as the 2021 Denali Conference runner ups are junior William Benes and senior Jana Allen who both advanced to the finals where each fell to their opponents. Also competing at the conference tournament were freshman Mckennan Mayer who ended his season with a third place finish, junior Fisher Mishmash (4th place), and freshman Liam Roosma. In addition to individual awards, winning the “good sport” awards were Freshman Mckennan Mayer and Senior Jana Allen.
