Courtesy of Coach Thompson – NYO wrapped up their 2021 Statewide Virtual Event this weekend after a short season, with a rocky start due to Covid-19. With only two athletes on the team, and being a coach new to NYO, it was a great opportunity to get to know and work with these athletes in these amazing
events. The team may have been small but Zoe Brown and Anthony Kelley showed up each and every day committed to getting better. As they trained they were able to teach me what they knew about NYO and the spirit of the games. We were also fortunate enough to have a volunteer coach and former athlete, Dakota Brown, come and share his knowledge throughout the season. With his help we were able to analyze technique and strategize methods of improvement.
Anthony Kelley, One Foot High Kick
With only two athletes and the ability to focus on them individually we were able to see some great improvement as the short season progressed. They have taught me so much about these games and it has been a pleasure to work with them this season. I am amazed by the mental and physical strength that NYO requires, and I am equally amazed to see our two athletes push themselves to new heights each day. We made the best of what we had and we look forward to being able to gather for the state wide event at the Alaska Airlines Center next season.

VHS Wrestling @ Lancer Smith
Courtesy of VHS Coaches – Buccaneer wrestling continued this weekend at the annual Lancer Smith Invitational where the bucs fielded a full roster for the first time this season. Leading the team once again in the win column is junior Alyvia Askren who went 2-0, beating opponents from North Pole and Palmer each via a first period fall, she now improves to 4-0 record on the season. Wrestling a grueling nine total matches each were juniors Wyatt Williams (2-10) and William Benes (3-6) , and sophomore Fisher Mishmash (2-7). Freshman Mckennan Mayer and Senior Isaiah Silveira each went 0-4 on the weekend, they now drop to 0-6 and 0-4 on the season respectively. Freshman Jaxson Gallatin went 1-2, now falling to 2-3 on the season. Overall, I am proud of our team’s fight and effort and I look forward to getting back into the room to sharpen our tools.
