COUNCIL TO CONSIDER MANDATE AMENDMENT WEDNESDAY

During their last meeting, City Council added Amendment No. 1 which allowed for a Hunting and Sport/Personal Use Fishing Exception. Amendment #2 proposed by Mark Detter would allow an additional exemption which permits people to enter Valdez and engage in recreational activities, lodge, and/or camp within Valdez without complying with the 14-day quarantine requirement if they are in compliance with State and Local Health Mandates.

The mandate specifically states that individuals arriving in Valdez for purposes of working on a seasonal basis or with the intention of residing in Valdez on a seasonal or permanent basis are not exempt. Although not outlined in the Mandate, it would appear that Valdezeans going to Anchorage or Fairbanks and coming back to Valdez are subject to the 14-day quarantine but visitors from Anchorage or Fairbanks coming into Valdez to recreate are exempt.

Please note – KVAK Editor has notified the City that we believe some of the attachments in this document are outdated. Specifically, the Sport and Personal Use Fishing information on page 10 is from the Alaska Dept. of Fish & Game letterregarding Sport and Personal Use Fishing published early April. It specifically states travelers must provision their whole trip from community of origin but the most current state regulations state travelers can stop for food, gas, or supplies if they practice social distancing rules as outlined in Attachment M.
