Seventeen band and choir students from Valdez High School attended the ASAA State Solo and Ensemble Music Festival and all returned with at least one superior rating. Students from 56 high schools from across Alaska participated in the showcase of vocal and instrumental performances at the UAA Campus last weekend.
In order to attend the event, students must qualify at a regional event which Valdez attended, the Aurora Music Festival, at Grace Christian High School a month ago. Fifteen Valdez events moved on to State competition.
Solos and ensembles are adjudicated and critiqued by professional musicians and those that are deemed excellent in preparation, musicianship, and presentation in every way are given a “Superior” rating. The following students received superiors:

Isaiah Silveira, tenor solo, “Who Is Sylvia” by Schubert, accompanied by Bonnie Thiel
Chase Randall, baritone solo, “Evermore” by Alan Menken, accompanied by Bonnie Thiel
