Norris Wins First In State For 3a Cross Country Skiing

Courtesy of VHS Ski Coach Pete Toye – Senior Rylee Norris had outstanding performances this past weekend. In Thursday’s 5K classic race she finished 26th overall but 1st in 3A; in Friday’s 7.5 skate race she also finished 26th overall and 2nd in 3A. Norris’s combined times for both days placed her in 24th overall and were the fastest in 3A earning her the coveted title of 3A Skimeister. Saturday’s relays (two classic legs/ 2 skate legs) were limited to the fastest 4 girls on each team and she posted the 15th best classic leg out of the 32 skiing that leg. The All-Senior Buc relay team consisting of Norris, Taylor Huston, Angie Alfaro, and Caitlin Connell had a solid showing in their final state event finishing ahead of both Eagle River and Seward. In addition to the relay girls, first year skier sophomore Victoria Korenev and freshman Grace Keller represented themselves well in their first state tournament and, along with sophomore Rowan Miller.

Junior Ben Swanson had a very competitive showing finishing 66th overall in the field of 99. He jumped an impressive 14 places in Friday’s skate. This year’s boys team was also senior laden and did the best they could in this very demanding environment. Coach Toye applauded their consistent efforts and work ethic and also wish to recognize `years in  program’ for these fine young men: Colton Prevost (3), Chris Cummins (2), and James Hancock (2), John Banner (1).
