The boys varsity team finished the weekend with a 2-1 record for the first conference games of the season. The Bucs first game of their road trip was against Delta last Thursday. The 1st and 2nd quarters were even for the teams with the Huskies leading at half 21-19. In the next half the Bucs couldn’t seem to diminish the deficit and lost 66-53. Valdez was led by senior Seth Auble who scored 17 points and tallied 7 rebounds.
On Friday, the Buccaneers travelled to Fairbanks to play two games against the Hutchison Hawks. Valdez had a much better outing against the Hawks winning 60-20. The Bucs shot 59% as team for the game and had every player on their roster score. Defensively, Valdez racked up 13 steals and only allowed the Hawks to score double digits in one quarter.
On Saturday, Valdez jumped out early outscoring Hutch 16-4 in the first quarter. Little by little, the Bucs began to slowly increase deficit and eventually went on a 15-8 scoring run in the 3rd quarter. Ultimately, Valdez played consistently throughout the game and swept the Hawks winning 63-45 in their final game of the weekend. Seth Auble led the way in this game scoring 20 points on 7-9 shooting and grabbed 7 rebounds. Also contributing to the win was sophomore Bennett Hinkle who scored 18 points and helped on the defensive end tallying 5 steals for the game.
