Boys Finish 2nd at Elks

(2-15-16) – Last weekend the VHS boys varsity team competed in the 39th annual Elks Basketball Tournament. The boys first game was against the Seward Seahawks. Valdez did not allow Seward to score more than nine points in each of the first three quarters. In the 4th quarter the Valdez boys scored 19 points and cruised to a 56-33 victory. Their next game would was against an old rival, the Cordova Wolverines. After three quarter of competitive play, Valdez went into the 4th quarter with a 10 point lead over the Wolverines. In the 4th quarter Cordova sparked a run scoring 19 points to try and catch the Bucs, but the deficit proved to be too much and Valdez was able to hold on 53-50. In the Championship game the Bucs went up against the Grace Christian Grizzlies. Valdez got off to a slow start only scoring 13 points in the 1st quarter as opposed to Grace’s 17 points. In the 2nd quarter the defense from the Grizzlies only allowed Valdez to score two points. Valdez tried to catch up over the course of the next two quarters but couldn’t overcome the deficit and lost to Grace 52-39 giving the Bucs a 2nd place finish in the tournament. The boys next games are this weekend in Fairbanks against the Monroe Catholic Rams.
