Presented by the Valdez Arts Council
Alaskan singer/songwriter Melissa Mitchell is coming to Rock Valdez with a night of Dancing at the Civic Center. It’s Beach Party theme so dress in Beach Wear or comfy casual. The Tanana Rafters will be the opening band for the event and local Valdezean Jamie Goudreau is a member of that band. Another Valdez local, Rik Nielsen, is a member of The Hope Social Club. The Sociables are an Alaskan Group, made up of six great friends that have been entertaining audiences in the North for years.
Hope Social Club is led by Melissa Mitchell, who has a knack for inviting people to join her on stage to play with her. Over the years, some musicians were invited more often than others and… The Sociables. Band members are Melissa Mitchell, Aaron Benolkin, Spiff, Tim Haren, Tony Restivo, and. Rik Nielsen.
Spiff was largely playing solo before joining forces with Melissa, Tony was the bass player for the infamous Girdwood jam band the Photonz, Aaron plays lead guitar for several bands, including the Whipsaws, the Jack River Kings, and the Lucky Dogs. Rik has been seen ripping guitar with the likes of Seth Freeman, and Tim has added his steady thumps to the Alaskan music scene for years.
Melissa Mitchell is a lifelong Alaskan, a mother and a committed social activist. Her remarkable voice and compelling life story embody the spirit and struggles of the people everywhere. As a songwriter Melissa is focused on honesty, connection and community. It is not an exaggeration to say that her personal integrity shines through in her music. Melissa’s exceptional talent is obvious to anyone who hears her. She has performed with artists like Michael Franti & Spearhead, Mason Jennings, the Indigo Girls and Greg Brown. She opened for Jewel in 2009 and elicited this comment from her fellow Alaskan: “(I was) so impressed with my other opening act, Melissa Mitchell. She was a great guitar player! She was confident and commanded her guitar- I love that! And her voice was just sweet and strong”. Melissa most recently played to a sold out house of over 2000 supporting kd lang.
