VHS Ski Coach Pete Toye (1-11-16) – Once again our great community came together and helped provide a terrific venue for another very competitive Nordic ski competition. Last weekend teams from West Valley, Lathrop, Colony, Su Valley, Wasilla, and Grace Christian joined the Valdez Bucs for two days of skiing action.
Friday’s mixed relay was dominated by a very powerful West Valley squad but the Valdez team of Rylee Norris, Stu Relay, Taylor Huston, and Ben Swanson managed a hard earned 6th place finish out of the 20 mixed teams involved.
Junior Rylee Norris had an outstanding race in Saturday’s girls varsity 5.4 skate competition in the field of 24. Norris finished a very impressive 3rd place in this very competitive group. This is one of our highest finishes in recent years. Senior Josie McNelly had a great effort, finishing 18th in just her second year. Junior Taylor Huston also shined in her second year of skiing by winning the JV competition by an impressive 26 seconds. Her 1st place performance, among 33 skiers, was also one of the highest JV finishes in recent Invites. Junior Angie Alfaro skied to a very respectable 22nd place in her very first year of ever being on skis. The Colony Knights were crowned girls varsity champions.
Senior Stuart Relay was the only Buc skier in the boys varsity competition and skied a personal best time (39:04) in the 8.4K race. In the 5.4 JV race, sophomore Ben Swanson had a very strong race finishing 11th in the field of 40. Freshman Isaiah Amberg impressed in his first year finishing in 26th position. Following Amberg with good efforts were second year skier junior Colton Prevost (32nd), and, first year skiers, juniors James Hancock (34th) and Chris Cummins (35th). West Valley won the boys title.
