Buccaneer Boys Impress In Their First Conference Games, Mott Standout Play For Buccaneer Games This Weekend

(1-11-16) – This past weekend the VHS basketball teams played their first games at home against the Hutchison Hawks. These games also marked the first conference games for the buccaneer season.

The boys varsity team had a strong victory Friday, winning 44-32. In the beginning the Hawks kept it close with second chance points and full court press. In the third quarter the Bucs went on a run and pulled away from the Hawks. The Bucs were led by junior Seth Auble who scored eight straight points in the 3rd quarter and finished the game with 19 points. The Varsity Lady Bucs lost their game in the closing seconds. The girls had a slow start, only scoring two points in the first quarter and 10 points in the 2nd. The Lady Bucs did, howeve,r show great defense holding Hutchison to three points in the 1st quarter and six points in the 2nd quarter. At the start of the second half the Hawks came back, outscoring Valdez 16-11. In the final quarter sophomore Makenzi Mott scored six points to keep the score close. Maddy Fleming’s scored 18 points overall, including one three pointer in the 4th quarter that brought the Lady Bucs to within 3 in the final seconds. The Hutchison lead proved too much for Valdez and the Hawks won the game 39-35.

The girls varsity team had a much more cohesive game on Saturday winning 37-31. The Lady Bucs scored 16 points in the 2nd quarter and held the Hawks to only 13 points in the first half. Makenzi Mott had an outstanding game, ending with 24 points. She also shot 100 percent from the line. The boys varsity team excited the hometown crowd with a 57-41 win over the Hawks Saturday. The boys started off hot scoring 18 points in the first quarter where the Bucs held onto the lead for the rest of the game. Seth Auble led the Buccaneers in scoring with 16 points. In addition, sophomore Tyler Mann did an outstanding job at the point guard position dishing out assists and conducting the buccaneer offense.
