OPEN AIR MARKET THIS FRIDAY, SATURDAY & SUNDAY
Gold Rush hosts an open air market in downtown Valdez under the painted mural across from the Post Office. Vendors, food, and live music. 
Friday Hours: 5pm to 10pm
Beer Garden Friday :  7pm to 10pm
Featuring the Future Babes & the Tanana Rafters
Saturday Hours: 10am to 5pm
Sunday Hours: Noon to 5pm  

 

KIDS SCAVENGER HUNT

Hey Kids – the Gold Scavenger hunt is this Friday at 2:30pm. Children of all ages, in teams of three, search the area for items. The team finding the most items will win a great prize! Meet at the Barney Meyring Picnic Shelter at 2:30pm . This event is free and no pre-registration is needed. Just show up with your friends. There will be teams of 7 and under and 8 and up. See you Friday for the Kids Scavenger Hunt.
 
 
Gold Rush Gabby Talk Show
Tune in this Wednesday and Friday mornings at 10am to hear from local event coordinators to get in depth details of the upcoming Gold Rush Days events. Listen live on 93.3 FM and 1230 AM to hear KVAK’s Gold Rush Gabby Talk Show.

 


WINE WALK

The Gold Rush Days Wine Walk is 5 to 7:30 this Friday night. The Wine Walk is an opportunity to taste wine with your friends as you follow a map and visit participating stores and businesses. The cost is $20 and it gets you a wine glass and a map of who’s serving up a good time Friday night. You can purchase a glass from Noon to 1pm and from 4pm to 5pm this Friday across from the Post Office. You may reserve a glass for a friend, but you must pay for THEIR glass and they must show a valid ID.
WOMEN'S DERBY EARLY REGISTRATION STARTS SATURDAY
The Valdez Prospector will host early registration for the Women's Silver Salmon Derby this Saturday. The theme of this year's event is "Fairy Tales" and there will be a costume contest Friday Night, August 8th at the Civic Center. Group participants will be allowed no more than 2 minutes to show off their costumes for a chance to win. There will also be an individual "Best Costume" winner. There will be prizes for the Top 50 fish caught and, in honor of the 10th Anniversary, the prize will be a fleece jacket.  The Queen of the Silver Salmon Sisterhood will be crowned Saturday night.

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BE A CUPCAKE WAR PARTICIPANT?
If you enjoy baking cupcakes and sharing with friends and neighbors, PTA organizers say you should sign up for the 3rd Annual Cupcake Wars. There is a $100 first place prize and $50 2nd place prize in both the kids and adult age divisions. There will also be a prize for the overall crowd favorite.

KIDS SCAVENGER HUNT

ALASKA INTERNATIONAL SENIOR GAMES
The Alaska International Senior Games are for those 50 and above. The games will be held in Fairbanks August 8th through the 17th, and these games are qualifying events for the 2015 National Senior Games to be held in Minneapolis next July. There are opening ceremonies, a dance social, and even a celebration of athletes on the Riverboat Discovery. Mark your calendars for the Alaska International Senior Games August 8th through the 17th. Registration closes July 31st.

2nd ANNUAL PINK SALMON FESTIVAL ART CONTEST
Test your artistic talents by decorating a 4 foot wooden fishing book cut out. Boots are available at the Civic Centre Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm for a minimum donation of $10. Return your fish to the Civic Center no later than July 3rd. All entries will be displayed and available for public voting starting July 4th through 6th. Quantities are limited to the first 25 aspiring artists. For more information, call Parks & Recreation at 835-2531.

Artist Opening – Friday, June 6th – 7 to 8pm
Location: Museum on Egan

Artists, Sheila Wyne, Don Decker, Linda Infante Lyons, Klara Maisch and Annette Bellamy along with author Kesler Woodward, take visitors on a tour of the exhibition and describe their work.
Event is FREE.
 
Artist Panel Discussion – Friday, June 6th – 8 to 9pm
Location: VCVB on Fairbanks Street

Artists from the show will gather  for a rare and lively discussion about how history and the reflection of place resonate with artists and art-making. Art-historian, Kesler Woodward, will facilitate the conversation. Refreshments will be served. This event is FREE.
 
Klara Maisch Workshop – Saturday, June 7th – 1 to 4pm
Location: Museum on Egan

Artist, Klara Maisch joins us from Fairbanks, to host a workshop, where participants will create a sketchbook from scratch, and  work outside to fill the pages in creative ways. Cost is $17 for members and $20 for non-members. Maximum of 12 participants.
 
Don Decker Presentation - Saturday, June 7th – 7 to 8pm
Location: VCVB on Fairbanks Street

Anchorage artist, author and teacher Don Decker, will share the evolution of his 50 years’ worth of work. Described as both an outstanding teacher and practicing artist, Decker’s presentation is a “can’t miss opportunity”. This event is FREE.

Palmer, Alaska – The 2014 Alaska State Fair exhibitor guide is now available on the Fair website,alaskastatefair.org. This is the one-stop resource for anyone thinking about entering an exhibit at the 2014 Fair. Departments include: Art; Baked Goods; Canning; Clay Arts; Creative Arts & Crafts; Crops; Fiber & Fleece; Flowers; Handwork & Needlework; Honey & Beekeeping; Livestock; Photography; Poultry; Quilts; Rabbits; Sewing; Spririt Beverages & Soda Pop and Woodworking.
 
As Alaska’s State Fair, the Fair accepts exhibit entries from around the state. There are entry points in Anchorage, Soldotna, Haines and Ketchikan, as well as at the fairgrounds itself.

VCVB SEEKING SKILLED EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
The Valdez Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking a skilled Executive Director. The position is permanent, full time with a salary range of $55,000 to $75,000. LITTLE LEAGUE REGISTRATION


It's not too late to sign your child up for Valdez Little League. There will be: T-Ball; Coach Pitch; Major: Minor and Junior teams.

FAMILY SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS
Meetings for a local support group welcomes parents, family and friends of children who are intellectually gifted yet challenged by behavioral issues, Autism spectrum, ADHD, OCD and more, will take place on the second Monday of each month at 7pm in the Coast Guard Community Center.
