Pink Salmon Festival—Saturday, July 2, 2016

Summer Art Contest, Display & Public Voting (10:00am3:00pm, Civic Center)

This summer’s art contest is all about fishing for Halibut! If you would like to participate then head up to the Civic Center to pick up your Halibut. Test your artistic talents by decorating a wooden Halibut cut‐out. These are available at the Civic Center Monday‐Friday 9:00am‐5:00pm for a minimum donation of $10 each. Return your decorated Halibut to the Civic Center no later than Thursday, June 30th, 2016 at 5:00pm. All entries will be on display at the Civic Center and available for public voting July 4th, 2016 from 10:00am‐3:00pm. Be sure to decorate a Halibut, or stop by and vote for your favorite entry. Open to all ages.

Pink Salmon Cook‐Off
(Challenger SetUp 10:00am; CookOff 12:00pm2:00pm; Judging 2:00pm‐3:00pm; Awards 3:00pm)


Celebrate Wild Alaska Pink Salmon with this opportunity for amateur and professional chefs of all types to submit original recipes for preparation of Pink Salmon and prepare those recipes for a panel of judges. Registration and recipe submittal must take place by 5:00pm June 30, 2016. Registration is limited to 20 participants, so register early. Chefs are required to provide all cooking facilities and amenities. Cash prizes ranging from $1,500 to $150 will be awarded for 1st‐5th Place. Civic Center Cinema Movie “Independence Day 2” (4:00pm and 7:00pm)

After the original “Independence Day” movie, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction. Kids’ Pink Salmon Games (Registration 1:30pm‐2:00pm; Games 2:00pm‐3:00pm)

Kids up to age 12 are encouraged to participate in silly Salmon‐centered games including the famous Pink Salmon Toss and the Pink Salmon Relay. Children should wear play clothes that can get dirty and some of the games include holding a real salmon. Pre‐registration on‐site at the Kelsey Dock Plaza is required and will take place from 1:30pm‐2:00pm. The games will run from 2:00pm to 3:00pm. A variety of small prizes will be awarded to the winners.

Free Community Pink Salmon Fry (3:00pm)

Enjoy a delicious sample of Wild Alaska Pink Salmon grilled to perfection and served with sides.

Independence Day Festival ‐ Monday, July 4, 2016

 

Most Patriotic Business Decorating Competition (Judging at 9:00am)

Businesses throughout town will compete for the most Patriotic Display. A group of Judges will visit the sites and assess points for overall creativity and Patriotic “flare.” The winning business will receive a plaque for display as well as coveted bragging rights!

Uncle Salmon 5K & 10K Fun Run (8:30am Registration; 9:30am Race Begins)

The Fun Run begins and ends at the South Barney Meyring Park strip on Pioneer, across the street from the Fire Station. New route this year that is sure to please. The route will use the West Dike and may not be stroller friendly. Registration is FREE. Prizes packages will be awarded to top finishers.

Kids’ Decorated Bike Parade (Decorating 11:0012:00; Parade LineUp 12:00pm; Parade Begins 12:00pm)

The Kids’ Decorated Bike Parade will lead the Independence Day Parade. No pre‐registration is required. Again this year, adult‐monitored bike decorating will be available at the Eagle’s Hall on Hazelet Avenue beginning at 11:00am. Free Bike Decorating Kits will be available. Participants are also encouraged to pre‐decorate, or bring additional items for decorating. Line‐up of the kids will take place promptly at 12:00pm in the Eagle’s Parking Lot. The Kids on Decorated Bikes will be one of the leading parade entries. At the end of the Parade route each participating child will be given a coupon for a free ice cream cone.

 

Independence Day Parade (Parade LineUp 11:30am; Parade Begins 12:00pm)

The Independence Day Parade is an opportunity for individuals, families, groups, businesses and organizations to show their patriotic spirit by participating in the parade with an entry or float. Pre‐registration is not mandatory, but is highly encouraged. Registration for the parade is free. There is no designated theme. Prizes for first, second and third place best entries will receive $100, $50 and $25, respectively. Line‐up begins at 11:30am and takes place on West Egan Drive. Annual Valdez Mascot Race (During the Parade)

Be sure to watch the 4th Annual Valdez Mascot Race during the parade. All of your favorite local mascots will be challenging each other for the title of “Ultimate Mascot Champion.” It should be a hoot and a half!  If you have a mascot and would like to participate, contact Rachel at Parks & Recreation. rsensabaugh@ci.valdez.ak.us

Slow Bike Race (Directly following the Parade)
  

How slow can you go on your bike? The slowest will win the race… (last one to cross the line without completely stopping or touching the ground.) Line up on Fairbanks Street directly following the parade. Must have your our two wheel bike and helmet. Ages 10 and up, waivers must be signed by adult parent/guardian. (Pre-registration is preferred).

Fairbanks Street Block Party
(Vendor Set Up 8:30am
11:30am; Open to Public 12:30pm After the Parade)


The Block Party is an open street fair with food, craft and activity vendors. The Block Party is open to the public and lasts from 12:30pm until 3:00pm. Vendors must pre‐register no later than July 1, 2016 at 3:00pm. The cost for vendors is $20.00. Vendors are responsible for all booth amenities, including tent coverage. Electricity may be available in limited quantities. Food vendors are required to have ADEC permits. Registration forms can be found on the event website. Owen Johnson Memorial Kids’ Games (1:00pm‐3:00pm)

This memorial to Owen Johnson is sponsored and organized by the local Eagle’s Aerie #1971. Young people are invited to participate in old fashioned activities like sack races and the like. Participation is free. The games are held on the Barney Meyring Park Strip across Pioneer Drive from the Fire Station in downtown. A variety of prizes are offered to game and competition winners.

Canoe Jousting (3:30pm‐5:30pm)

Teams of two battle it out against each other for the championship. Each team has a paddler and a jouster. The paddler strategically maneuvers the canoe while the jouster uses a pugil stick to up‐end the opponent and their canoe. Competition is open to participants 16 and older. Participants under 18 must have waiver signed by adult parent/guardian. Canoes, life jackets and pugil sticks are provided. Participants must be able to swim and attire appropriate with being completely submerged is necessary. It is free to participate and cash prizes will be awarded to 1st‐4th Place. This is a great spectator event so please come watch and cheer on your favorite team even if you won’t be jousting. The event is held at Ruth Pond at the corner of Hazelet and Fidalgo.

USCG Small Boat Station Boat Tours (4:00pm6:00pm)

Our local US Coast Guard Small Boat Station will be hosting tours of their vessels at the Coast Guard Dock located at the west end of Fidalgo Drive.

Free Community Picnic & Live Music (5:00pm)

Enjoy free burgers down at the Kelsey Dock Plaza while listening to live music from visiting band “The Shoot Dangs” and enjoying the amazing view of Port Valdez. Food will be served until it is gone.

Independence Evening at the Kelsey Dock Plaza (7:00pm10:30pm)

Hurricane

Spend the evening at the Kelsey Dock Plaza enjoying live music with Sarah Peacock from 7:00pm‐10:00pm. Kick back and enjoy the bonfire while you roast marshmallows and make s’mores from 7:00pm‐10:00pm.

Be sure to bring your own roasting stick, but the s’more supplies will be provided.

At 7:00pm the Parks & Recreation Department will host more kids’ activities on the grassy area down at the Kelsey Plaza. Activities for kids ages 10 and under will include bean bag toss, plinko, and wacky‐golf. Small toy prizes will be awarded to winners.

Finally, grab a chair and watch the annual FIREWORKS DISPLAY which begins at 10:00pm and lasts approximately 20 minutes. Fireworks will be shot from the new harbor uplands area so there are several great waterfront vantage points including the Kelsey Dock area.
